Louis Cardinals uniform looks pretty good on Juan Agosto, especially considering the uniforms he's worn in the past. The new addition to the Cardinals' relief corps has spent the better part of six major-league seasons with the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros, thereby earning the dubious distinction of having worn two of the most unusual uniforms in major-league history. Agosto wore the loose fitting black uniform familiar to the White Sox in the late 1970s and early '80s. Then, after a brief stint in Minnesota in 1986, Agosto donned the Astros' rainbow collection. Agosto's pitching has not paralleled the uniforms he's worn.
So when the Cardinals lost reliever Ken Dayley to the Toronto Blue Jays via free agency, they signed Agosto to a three year contract for $4.6 million. "We wanted to re-sign Dayley," said Cardinals manager Joe Torre. "But Agosto will give us something Dayley couldn't give us a lot of innings. "We had to be cautious about how much we used Dayley because of his history of arm problems. Agosto can be used more on an everyday basis." Agosto said pitching every day has never been a problem.
"I've always been able to pitch a lot of days in a row," he said. "One time in Houston I pitched seven straight days." Cardinals catcher Tom Pagnozzi said Dayley and Agosto have different styles. "Both are effective," Pagnozzi said. "Dayley has the good fastball, but I think Agosto's sinker will make him more effective against right-handers, whereas Dayley was used primarily to get the lefthanders out. And Juan's got a rubber arm." Torre said he hopes to use Agosto anywhere from 70 to 80 games.

That effort should feel less intense than a race because the distance is shorter. But running alone without the motivating ingredients of a race provides its own stress. It's important to warm up for a time trial as you would before a race. Jog to break a sweat, stretch and do a few quick strides.
Then, after the time trial, jog and stretch some more. Make sure your time-trial course is measured accurately and aim for an even pace. This is another advantage of time trials: sharpening your sense of pace. Studies have found that a consistent pace is the best strategy for peak performance. Bloom's research also snows that most runners even some elite runners start out too fast in competition.
Someone attempting to run a 5-mile race in 30 minutes usually dashes the opening mile in 5:40 or so to put time "in the bank." This is rarely an effective tactic. Running an evenly paced 3-mile trial in 18 minutes would be an indication that under race conditions you could hit the 30-minute goal. That would depend, however, on your recovery from the time trial. Extreme fatigue would suggest your goals are too high. A quick recovery might mean you can run even faster.
If you miss your goal in a time trial, you should probably re-evaluate your training. Runners who find it impossible to "perform" without company should use races as time trials. In 1987, they reopened Lakeland Interstate Speedway after it had been closed 10 years. They also recently signed a deal to lease nearby Auburndale Speedway. Starting next month, they'll offer Friday-Saturday night doubleheaders to Polk County fans. Lakeland is now an established quarter-mile.
Don Nerone said they average between fans and almost 150 cars. "I think we have the second best car count in the state," Nerone said. "We're right behind, probably, Sunshine. But isn't everyone behind Sunshine?" While rebuilding Lakeland Interstate Speedway, Nerone has built a reputation as a promoter. His approach is conservative.
