Heartbreakingly beautiful, a photograph of a brave little girl battling cancer has captured the hearts of many and earned a place in a prestigious photography competition. This image, taken by Kris Askey, features three-year-old Jessie undergoing treatment at Birmingham Children's Hospital. It's a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by young patients and their families.
Askey, who works with the hospital's fundraising team, captured Jessie on the oncology ward, where she was treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. He expressed his honor at having the photo recognized, hoping to raise awareness for children like Jessie and the hospital itself.
The photograph is one of 200 shortlisted entries for the British Journal of Photography's Portrait of Britain Awards. The judges will select 100 winning images in January. These winning photographs will be featured in the eighth volume of the publication's Portrait of Britain book series. Furthermore, they will be displayed on digital JCDecaux UK advertising screens nationwide.
Askey, hailing from Redditch, Worcestershire, focuses his photography on capturing the stories of staff and patients. He hopes his photograph will highlight the struggles of young children like Jessie, who endure hardships they never anticipated.
"There is so much kindness, hard work and empathy that goes on inside the walls of the hospital and that is what I have always wanted to show within my photography there," he explained.
